Water, a natural resource, is the fundamental need of living beings and an invaluable natural wealth. Sufficient amount of water is the gift of nature, at least in the north-east region of India. The bulk of water in this region, both surfaceand ground water, is obtained from rainfalt. T 0 ensure preservation and to optimize the utilization of the available resources, a proper water policy must be formulated.
Clean and safe drinking water is scarce. OHIY one percent of the total water resources on earth is available for human use. Nearly one billion people have no access to safe water. So, we must not waste or pollute what we have. Up to thirty percent of fresh water supplies Is lost due to leakage. About ninety percent of sewage and seventy percent of industrial wastes are discharged into water without treatment. It pollutes the usable water supply. All these must be stopped.
For maintaining life and ecological balance and for economic activities, Optimal and economical use of water has now become a matter of urgency.
